Interview with Author Cathy S. Tooley

Hello everyone, this is an interview time and today Author Cathy S. Tooley is with us...

  1. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I never set out to be a writer.  I was born a teacher.  Teaching is in my blood.  From as far back as I can remember, teaching was what I planned on doing.  I went to college to TEACH.  I loved TEACHING.   I was natural at it and I loved being in the classroom, impacting my students, and teaching.  It was all I ever wanted to do.

I was a great teacher for twenty years and remained rather protected from most of the “politics” of education. I heard about it and saw it some but had never really personally been impacted by it.  I taught, I enjoyed my students, loved my career and felt blessed that my “calling” had come to pass and was now a career.

Then, I became an administrator and ultimately a building level principal and quickly saw with my own eyes and felt with my own experience the things that were happening in our schools.  I saw students discarded.  I watched the “numbers” and the “scores” take rank over doing what was best for students and the educators.  I watched the political “niceness” of those in power supersede the needs and demands of students and educators.  I “kept the waters calm” at the cost of what I KNEW in my heart was right so that right person would remain happy.  I knew, based on my experience and the experiences of my colleagues I HAD to write this book. I was raised that complaining about a topic does NOTHING to change it.

This book was more the subject that I felt HAD to be addressed.  I knew, after thirty years in public education and watching what was happening in our educational system, I HAD to write this book. I knew, in writing and having it published, it would change my career in education.  I knew and know that the dialogues that this book will inspire WILL be difficult and will cause some dissention in some of my former colleagues.  While that last statement brings me NO joy and some sadness I also know that our students and our educators deserve more and we must begin the uncomfortable conversations if we ever want to affect change.

I just knew, based on my thirty years of experience that this book HAD to be written, these conversations HAD to be had, the change has to be made and this book had to be published…… So, I did.

  1. How long does it take you to write this book?
I began writing this book in January of 2015.  Began submitting to publishers in March of 2015.  Was picked up by a publisher within a week and signed the contract in October of 2015.  Release date is April 6, 2016.
  1. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
I left my career in education in November of 2014.  I spent the months of January, February and March of 2015 writing and building my new business, Tools for Success.

  1. What brought you to write this book?
I think I already answered this in number one.  But, let me add this.  I am a very passionate person.  When I believe in something I move forward with both feet, full time and completely committed.  I wrote this book with the same passion.  Once I picked up my computer and began “writing” this book I knew my life would be different.  I knew the career I had built for over thirty years was changing AND had prepared me for this moment and this time to begin these critical conversations.

  1. How you become a published author? Any inspiration?
That story is rather funny.  I had NO idea how to write a book let alone get it published. I KNEW in my heart that this book would be published.  I never questioned that.  I KNEW that the moment I began typing and pouring out what has to be said!

Remember, I was in education.  I had certainly read my entire career.  I had an entire library of amazing books to inspire, to teach, to influence and to guide me in my career.  As a principal I conducted book studies with my staff every semester to assist us in looking at our craft differently.  I was always open to and looking for ways to make the learning of our students better, stronger, richer and more meaningful.

After I had written my own book and took it to one of my former English teachers to assist me with editing.  I was in a quandary as to how to “submit” it.  Do I just google publisher?  Do I look on line?  I was really at a loss.

Then, one night I had an idea.  I pulled every one of those books that I had collected and read over my thirty years in education off of my shelves.  I created a spreadsheet of the book titles and the addresses of each of those publisher.  I sorted and discovered that most of those amazing books were published by about ten different publishers.

So, I got on line.  Five of those ten would not allow you to submit your manuscript without a “literary agent”.  I did not even know what one of those was, let alone have one.   The other five did allow me to submit.  I completed their required paperwork and as they say, the rest is history.  Within a week Rowman and Littlefield reached out to me, requested revision, and here we are today.

  1. Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
I lived it.  This book is based on my personal experience, the personal experience I witnessed from my own colleagues and other educators.

  1. When did you write your first book and how old were you?
This is my first book.

  1. What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I LOVE spending time with my family.  My husband and I have been married for over thirty years.  We are the proud parents of three amazing and inspiring children.  Two of our children are out of college and living their lives.  One of them just got married in October and the other one is getting married in March of 2017.  Our youngest is a sophomore in college now studying engineering.

Anything that puts me with my growing family and spending time together is exactly what I LOVE to do and exactly where I want to be.

  1. How many books have you written? Which is your favourite?
This is my first book.  There will be others, but this is my first.

  1. What's next for you? What are you working on now?
What is next for me is to get the conversations started regarding our educational system.  I started my own business, Tools for Success.  I am a consultant, a coach and a public speaker.  It is my intention to speak to audiences and to then assist all of us to move to a less divisive attack on public schools.  I will create a new way of “doing business”.  I will create the uncomfortable conversations.  I will open dialogues and create new ways of educating our students that respect the educators in our schools.

Interview with Author Casey Bell

Hello everyone, this is an interview time and today Author Casey Bell is with us...

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Ans. => I don't think I wanted to be a writer. I saw a movie and it inspired me to write my first book back in 2004. I got writer's block so I stopped. Then in 2007 I decided to write a book based on my high school experience.  From there every time I got an idea I wrote, but I never thought it would get to this point.

How long does it take you to write this book?

Ans. => This particular book took me about two weeks to write. I was unemployed at the time so I had time.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
Ans. => It depends on the book. Each book has its own story of how I wrote it and how long it took. I generally about the book (story) before writing. I then start writing. Sometimes I get blocked, but for the most part I can write it within a month. The only book that took me twelve years to write is my upcoming book, A Family of Strangers.  A mixture of writers block and procrastination caused it to be that long.

What brought you to write this book?
Ans. => I wanted to share stories and experiences that due to condemnation and judging Americans are too afraid to share. We all know no one is perfect and that we have all made mistakes and done bad things, but yet we still are afraid to share and in the same breathe are hypocritical enough to judge others knowing we have wronged too.  I am hoping when people read this book it will cause them to share their experience and not be ashamed or guilty to do so.

How did you become a published author? Any inspiration?
Ans. => My church had a seminar on how to self-publish books. I went and took all the notes I needed. I then went and self-published my first short story, The Diary of Stephanie Dane, and just kept going. Every time I got an idea I wrote and then published it. My inspiration is life itself. I’m a bit weird in that I can see something going on and then turn it into a book instantly, simply by exaggerating the experience.  Things like people walking, or arguing, or laughing, simple things I see and can make a story out of it.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
Ans. => It is a mixture of my life experiences, people I know experiences, situations from television shows or movies, and lastly my wild imagination. When you’re creative a wild imagination automatically is apart of you.

When did you write your first book and how old were you?
Ans. => The first book I completed was in 2007 and I was twenty-five years young.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
Ans. => Graphic designing, cooking, tennis, jogging, performing arts, and listening to music.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
Ans. => Including this book I have published six short stories, one memoir, two word search books, and on March 24 I will be publishing my first children’s book, You Are Beautiful.  There is no such thing as a favorite (for me at least).  Each book has it’s unique story of how it was created so I can say I have a favorite.  However, I will say that this book, Essays from Dysfunctional Families: Literary Betrayal is one of a kind. I have never written a book like this (two books in one.)

What's next for you? What are you working on now?
Ans. => I am in the process of publishing my next book A Family of Strangers.  I can’t say too much about it without spoiling the story line, but for the most part it is about a boy who has been adopted and a few years later his biological parent’s return in his life.  The book’s theme is forgiveness and I already know most people will not enjoy the ending.

Interview with Author Troy Gathers

Troy Gathers is an inspirational author from Charleston, SC. In this interview he talks about his first book of quotes, Take Me With You.

1. Reading has been your passion for a long time. What do you usually read?
Reading is necessary if your grooming yourself to become a leader. Books that I love to read are based on leadership, goals and inspiration. I am also huge on books based on history and how things work behind the curtains.

2. How do you balance fiction and non-fiction in your schedule?
That is a great question. Majority of what I read is non-fiction. Don’t get me wrong, I love a great CSI or Law and Order episode but on a regular basis I’m reading a book directly related to a short or long term goal.

3.How should books be viewed: Solely for entertainment or should there be a learning curve involved too?
It depends on the purpose of the book. If the author composed a horror story, I wouldn’t be searching for many jewels in that book. There is a time and a place for everything and in the literary world, being creative is key. Some books are written to teach and others to catch your attention. As a reader just be mindful of what you internalize as truth.

4. How did you come with the idea of putting together your favorite quotes in Take Me With
You?
While in undergrad, I said I would write a book but didn’t know which direction I was going in with the subject matter. The idea was still in the back of my mind but I was full-time with my business endeavors. Over the past 10 years I have been composing my own quotes and words of wisdom. Now, 10 years later I have all these quotes in front of me. I saw it as divine intervention. I was writing this book the entire time and didn’t realize it.

5. How did you go about choosing the quotes?
That process was difficult because I had thousands of quotes to choose from. First, I composed the chapter titles: Friends, Family and Faith. After the chapters were created, I searched for the best quotes that closely dealt with the subject matter of the chapters. There will be additional volumes to Take Me With You, this is volume 1.

6. What makes a good quote book?
A good quote book will provoke change in your life. Today especially, people fight for the right not to change. Quotes should inspire and move the reader. Words have power and should be used ultimately for the good of your fellow man.

7. There are so many books of quotes out there, what makes yours special?
Perspective.  The reader gets a new insight from someone that has a passion for helping others and has clarity on the road ahead. After reading this book, the reader will do some soul searching. I love this book and you will too. It’s available on Amazon.com now. Be sure to pick it up.
